“I like the pause that tea allows” – Waris Ahluwalia
In the hustle and bustle of the city, our lives can be consumed with rushed activity and continual multitasking. Here at The Grounds of the City, we want to transport you through time to another era, and hopefully allow a moment of pause.
As the City’s resident tea lady, I’m on hand to not only brighten your afternoon with sweet treats (read on to learn about our new dessert special) but also to share with you my 5 ideas and ways you can take time to pause in the city, and in your life, this week.
Yoga and Tea are all you need
In the Sydney Domain (a ten minute walk from The Grounds of the City), Live Life Get Active holds free yoga classes at 12:30pm and 1:15pm on varying weekdays during the school terms (open to the public).
After yoga class, with your mind relaxed and body rejuvenated, I recommend easing your body back into the rhythm of life with a soothing cup of our bottomless tea from The Grounds of the City. My pick? Gunpowder green or peppermint for the perfect, meditative tea-drinking experience.
The Whole World is a Garden
Experience escapism like no other in the Chinese Garden of Friendship. This serene, secluded garden is hidden away in Darling Harbour, a short walk from The Grounds of the City. The tranquil environment respectfully recreates the philosophy and harmony of a traditional Chinese garden with waterfalls, lakes, exotic plants, pavilions and hidden pathways.
Treat your ears to live classical music with the Conservatorium’s Lunchbreak Concert series. From 12:30 pm every Wednesday & Thursday during the semester, immerse yourself in a free 45-minute concert featuring an array of music from Conservatorium students. From Jazz Orchestras to Chamber Music, Classic Guitar and Contemporary Music, you’re sure to find some music that’s your cup of tea.
Make an afternoon of your musical outing and swing by The Grounds of the City, where you’ll find me roving the aisles from 2pm-6pm on weekdays. Order the vanilla custard Mille-Feuille special, and I’ll bring you the theatre of garnishing and caramelising the dessert at your table, finished with your choice of fresh summer berries, stone fruit compote or poached rhubarb & orange.
Art and a cocktail or two? We think so too.
Feeling a little arty? Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art and join a free, daily guided tour of the MCA Collection: Today Tomorrow Yesterday to discover art, artists and their hidden stories.
Whether it’s today, tomorrow or whenever, I’d recommend finishing your day off with one of our artistic, floral cocktails over dinner.
Feel like royalty
Add a touch of romance to your day by visiting the elegant Romanesque interiors of the QVB. Whether you’re just passing through or shopping up a storm, make sure you take a moment to appreciate the true beauty of this grand, historic building.
Whether you’re looking to escape the rush of the City or just need a midday recess; a cup of tea and slice of cake is the perfect way to break up your day. With so much to do and see in Sydney, I hope you’ll join me at the in the City at the end of it all for an afternoon of calm as I take you back to a time when things were a little more still.
