Have you ever wondered how our pastry chefs create those deliciously perfect swirls on our salted caramel tarts here at The Grounds?
You may have assumed that we use a purpose built cake turntable. That would make sense, right? If that’s the case, you would have assumed incorrectly. Here’s a plot twist for you – They use a record player. And no, this isn’t us trying to be cool, edgy & #hipster, it’s actually just a really effective way of creating a smooth swirl.
We’ve been using a record player to spin our tarts for a year now. DJ Megan, one of our talented pastry chefs, spins over 400 tarts a week on this bad boy so it gets quite the workout.
The team are always looking for new and innovative ways to help perfect their creations and Megan first saw the record player being used on an Instagram video that went viral.
If Megan wasn’t spinning tarts in our club (and by club we mean bakery), she’d be spinning some Otis Redding or Al Green. She’s a bit of an old soul our Megan.
Megan teaches our monthly cake decorating classes, to learn more of her tricks and tips, sign up for our next class here.
