The Grounds by the Sea – It’s Back!
At The Grounds, we love nothing more than creating new and different experiences for our guests and so we’re headed back to our spot perched atop Marks Park, Tamarama, for our third year of Sculpture by the Sea.
This year we’re doing things a little different again; we’re bringing the magic of the desert with us.
Inspired by the feelings and emotions of America’s South West, The Grounds Co-Founder and aptly nicknamed ‘kid with the big ideas’, Ramzey Choker, along with The Grounds Head Stylist, Therese Moussa are designing a beautiful, Arizona-inspired, desert oasis that creates a feeling of peacefulness, with no detail left unconsidered.
There’s a seemingly obvious contrast between the Arizona desert and Bondi beach, but the warm weather, beautiful sunsets, breathtaking scenery and invigorating feeling of being surrounded by wide open spaces and fresh air bring Arizona and Bondi together, creating a much stronger connection for the 2016 theme of the The Grounds by the Sea than the seemingly trendy cacti.
With less than a week to go until we open the doors of our abode, the Grounds family are busy building and creating a space that feels authentic and welcoming. Repurposing our much loved ‘Hobbit’ house from last year’s exhibition, the architecture and interior design of the house will be heavily influenced by the American Southwest region. With a rendered finish in beautifully rich terracotta and peach tones, and a floral rooftop of seaside daisies grown for the pop-up, the house will have a humble feel and fit right at home atop the hill as the sun rises over Bondi each morning.
We’ll be keeping things a little prickly though, with a garden installation including traditional dry-climate succulents of cacti and agave while the furnishings will be eclectic; there will be plenty of seating options with wrought iron chairs, benches, low coffee tables and tiled table tops.
For the first time this year, we’ll be opening the doors of the house to welcome our guests to take a peek inside and look at the inner workings of the kitchen as they create a special edition menu that’s sure to offer something for everyone. We’ll be firing up the coffee machines and rolling out breakfast from 7am each morning, and serving up lunch from 11:30am right through until 7:30pm each evening, with a deliciously refreshing drinks menu of juices, sodas and smoothies on offer all day.
It’s a whirlwind journey building a pop-up venue for just two and a half weeks, but when presented with an opportunity to create a new experience that feels authentic, it’s simply not one The Grounds can say no to. So, mark it in your calendars, our doors will open Thursday 20th October through to Sunday 6th November and you’re invited to come by, sit and stay a while.
Sea you soon!
